Is Facebook relevant for Small Businesses?

This is a question I pondered myself until this year when I decided to get serious about Facebook. I took the time to set up a nice business page at fb.com/dallaswebdesign. There are a few things that I have done to make the site more SEO friendly and keep it updated. First off, if I have designed a website for you it likely was built on wordpress, my CMS engine of choice. If you are not blogging on your site yet, you should. Search Engines LOVE fresh content. Make sure to talk about things relative to your business, but don’t let it stagnate. I can assist you with articles if you want to get your site updated.
Step two is to connect your site to Facebook so these blog postings show up automatically. This is done with a simple plug in. Thus, you are adding fresh content to facebook without any additional work.
Step Three is to get fans, email everyone you know in facebook and in your business. Hold a contest ( maybe you have noticed some large companies doing this right now) and give away something to drive traffic. Once of the nice things about facebook is once you have 25 fans you get to select your page URL name, in my case it is dallaswebdesign. This gives me a small advantage in facebook and in Google. Better you get the URL before your competitor wakes up and does it.
Now, the question is why am I doing all of this? If you could advertise for free to your clients and customers on a regular basis, somewhere where you knew they were spending time, wouldn’t you do it? Here are some staggering statistics, about facebook. 800 million people are on FB and they all spend time reading updates and posting photos, why shouldn’t your news be in the mix?

I recently finished Courtney’s website for her holistic medicine business in California. She had an old dated site that needed a big facelift and she wanted to be able to write about topics that interested her and pertained to her clients. We built the site on WordPress and set up the front page to handle her latest news. As part of her cross marketing efforts we have also integrated a mailing list sign up that will allow her to send her clients newsletters and offers as often as she needs to via Mailchimp. Courtney also has a Facebook page and wanted to cross post her latest article to Facebook automatically. We set that up as well. She now has a great way to proactively contact her clients and grow her business and it is all handled in one spot, accessible from anywhere.

NTTA.org: A lesson on how not to design a site

I have spent an 20 minutes on NTTA’s web site ( North Texas Toll Authority) trying to figure out how to log in to pay a zip cash bill. This site is a classic example of what I like to call “needless chaos.” These are sites that like to run people around in circles as they try to find what they need. Honestly, the only reason anyone would visit this site would be to pay a zipcash bill or update their Tolltag info. Those options should be front and center on the main page, and yet when you get on this site it isn’t clear where to go or how to get what you need. I went to a page that asked me to input all my zipcash bill info and was told they couldn’t find anything.

I then tried to log in to my Tolltag account and was eventually locked out of the site. That is my idea of a poorly designed site. I find it ironic that these clowns are more interested in having me follow them on Facebook and Twitter than paying my bill. Yet, both of those are front and center on the main page of the site.

Just to add insult to injury I called their phone number and it rings busy. Ahh, those tax dollars at work.

They were looking for something that conveyed their business and used various shades of the ubiquitous lime. They also had a style and ease of navigation they wanted to convey. HIO ( hole in one insurance) wanted to upgrade their site from an older tables format with static html to a CMS platform that would be more user friendly and easily upgradeable. We accomplished this by loading their site on a WordPress CMS. Site also has a small flash image on the upper right and a section to release press releases and articles. SEO improvements have also helped this international company rise in Google.

Looking Glass Healing is an in home massage service here in Dallas. They wanted their Dallas Massage Therapy site to transcend the web and calm and the viewer. To accomplish this we used a beautiful waterfall backdrop and added some transparency to the web pages.
